Weston Scholarship Fundraiser - New Bohemian Nights Dinner

Join Us:
Back in the day Wildcat Hill was known as the “little house with the big mood”.
Edward Weston and his cronies spent many nights whooping it up, they shared meals, danced, read poetry and looked at each others work. All kinds of artists gathered together, Ansel Adams, Ruth Bernhard, Imogen Cunningham and Dorothea Lange, to name just a few.

Amazing Experience:
Here is your opportunity to make your own memories and experience what they had. Come step back in time and imagine Edward Weston showing his photographs, then step into his original darkroom where he made some of his most famous prints. Hear the voice of Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts and visual Robinson Jeffers while he reads Jeffers poetry. Feel the connection of the two artists and feel the intimacy of the spirit that still lives at Wildcat Hill today!

This evening will be an exclusive bohemian night of food, photography, poetry reading, festivity and wine. Just like they used to do it in the old days. Come party with us in the former home of Edward Weston!

“Growing Up Weston” the new documentary depicting three generations of Westons, will premiere at the 60th Birthday Celebration of Kim Weston, grandson of Edward, son of Cole and nephew of Brett Weston --- the first family of photography OF California whose landmark work has been recognized internationally.

Award-winning Writer/Director Isaac Artenstein captures Kim Weston at Wildcat Hill, near Point Lobos, where Kim’s grandfather Edward lived and created some of the most iconic work in 20th Century photography. Kim lives there now with his wife Gina and son Zachary, photographing, teaching and heading the Weston Scholarship, which supported the production of this documentary.

In “Growing Up Weston” we visit the lovingly preserved family home, and step into Edward’s darkroom, where Kim shows how his grandfather used only a contact printer, a light bulb and a kitchen timer to create his highly sought after masterpieces. Kim also demonstrates his own printing techniques in his own darkroom in Wildcat, where he also holds photography workshops, lectures and special presentations year-round.

Our Mission: To educate and enlighten the community about the richness of photography on the West Coast.

It is our goal to keep the traditional process of the black and white fine art photography alive in the tradition of Edward Weston and Ansel Adams. Support this philosophy in our local schools - celebrating the roots of our photographic history. We offer students, artists, educators and the community the opportunity to experience the richness of photography through scholarships, mentorships, exhibitions, workshops, publications, lectures, video and artists in residence.

Be the Light Fundraiser - A Benefit for Rachael Short

On November 1, 2010 we awoke the morning after Halloween to find out the Rachael Short had been in a very serious car accident. Rachael is a local Carmel (Big Sur) photographer whom we have become very good friends with these past several years. She is a young photographer with a thriving wedding photography business and she is also a fine art photographer. She has traveled extensively outside of the USA and photographed her way around the world.

We had the pleasure of getting to know Rachael through our workshops where she modeled for us and showed her work as a guest artist at several of our workshops. We also worked with her and Evynn LeValley at their Exposed Gallery when they gave Kim a show in the summer of 2010. Unfortunately Rachael's injuries were pretty severe and she suffered a spinal cord injury and she is in a wheelchair for the time being. This is a quote from Rachael's latest blog entry.

"Love, Life, Light: a series of Polaroid transfers made with the help of Evynn LeValley. This series was started on my 28th birthday when I was backpacking in Pine Valley, Los Padres Forest. The idea was to document my hands every year to show my aging. After my car accident on November 1, 2010, when I suffered a spinal cord injury which left my hands impaired, this series has taken another meaning. My hands are changing monthly, becoming stronger, changing shape. Time (along with hard work and motivation) will tell how much function I will regain. I hope for full function and try not to think otherwise. The mind is a powerful tool." Rachael Short.

Below are some photos from Rachael's Benefit. We raised over $100,000.00!!! Thanks to our crew! Erin Kenyon came to me and said I want to do this in April which was only a few months away - some thought she was out of her mind but with love and help of an amazing community of friends we pulled it off with such great success!!! Cheers to you Rachael and to your recovery. We all love you very much.
