The collaboration between Edward, Charis, and the sand dunes of Oceano took place between 1935 and 1937. The Oceano Dunes are located in the San Luis Obispo area of Southern California.

Charis described the atmosphere of the dunes as "an exhilarating sense of freedom." She was able to be nude and free as she rolled down the warm dunes. Edward shot this series using his 8x10 view camera from an opposite dune to give the figure depth while casting a small shadow.

An interesting note is that all of these images were full figure and Edward followed that trend in his photography with his nudes thereafter.

The Edward Weston Photography Gallery occupies the photographer's house and darkroom, south of Carmel, where he lived from 1938 until his death in 1959.

"The Little Gray House in the West" is now home to Kim Weston, Edward Weston's grandson and an internationally recognized fine-art photographer, who lives, works, and teaches on the property with his wife, Gina. The house's original structure and Edward's darkroom have remained as they were when Edward lived here. The home now displays photographs printed from his original negatives by his youngest son, and Kim's father, Cole Weston.
