Weston Workshops Highlight: Alex Davis
Born in Lakewood NJ in 1970, Alex Davis has been around cameras and photography his entire life. He spent his childhood at the edge of the Pine Barrens in Jackson, NJ and at the Jersey Shore before moving to Maine. Alex attributes his early interest in photography to his father, Al Davis, Jr. Early photographic influences included New England photographers Alison Shaw and the late Peter Simon. Evolving to photograph the nude figure, Alex took his first workshop with Kim Weston in 2005 and has been associated with the Weston Family and Wildcat Hill ever since. Alex is also an alumnus of the Maine Media Workshops where he has attended photography workshops taught by Sam Abell, Keith Carter and Jay Maisel, to name a few.
The auspices of his day-job have allowed Alex to travel the world. From the majesty of the Big Sur to the Souks of the Middle East; from hiking the rocky coast of New England to braving the traffic jams of the Subcontinent; there is always a camera by his side. Returning visits to Wildcat Hill are always filled with gratitude and friendship: stories, food, laughter, learning and being able to photograph in studio and on the grounds is always a kind of Homecoming. When asked about his “best” work, Alex responds wryly: “I hope I haven’t done it yet!” He shoots digitally and 6x7 medium format film.

It has been a pleasure getting to know Alex over the years. He has become a very close friend and always brings good energy to our workshops. Seeing the progression of his photography over the years is amazing and it is fun to see the different directions his work has taken.
We look forward to spending more time and creating art with Alex in the future. Hopefully we will make it to Maine one day and maybe even do a workshop over there!
