A Photographic Adventure in The Wild West
Fine Art Photographic Models
Our model line up for this year’s Weston Destination Workshop in Wyoming was nothing short of STELLAR! Viribus Femina, Perrin Marie, and Gazelle Powers all contributed their amazing posing skills at our varying locations at the Boyer YL Ranch. Their professionalism is second to none and there was never any issues with the poses they were asked to perform.
What makes these wonderful humans stand out as models is their deep rooted interest and desire to create deeper meaning through their work. Their poses are thought out and intentional to their surrounding area. What is amazing about this approach is that the photographs that come out of these sessions are riddled with layers upon layers of emotion, and a deeper meaning of connection.
Not only were the participants totally amazed at the quality of posing that was offered but the models got along super well together. A quick bond was formed which instantly added trust into the equation. That trust allowed them to model together at times and be totally in the moment with full expression needed to create meaningful images.
Photographers Working in the Field
The groups paired off nicely for this workshop working in groups of 2 and 3. We always strive to keep the photographer group small so the model to artist ratio remains low. We have always believed in keeping the groups intimate as it actually helps increase the quality of work that is created. With a small group, the participants are ale to connect with one another and build trust throughout the week. There are a lot of shared ideas, and helping hands. It is always nice to see a group member holding a piece of fabric or reflector for a fellow photographer.
This photographer group was a great mix of new and old faces. We love both of those scenarios! A returning photographer means they attained some kind of connection from a past workshop that has inspired them to come create with us more. A new attendee means we now have the opportunity to establish a new connection and make a new friend along the way. it is awesome to see those photographers who have been with us for many years how their work progresses and changes over time.
Photographic Opportunities
During our photographic adventure this year, there was never a shortage of locations or inspiration! During our Wild West Photo Adventure at The Boyer YL Ranch we strive to introduce 4-5 separate locations. This allows participants and models to come up with different collaborations in different environments. We always use the Ranch House as home base but then branch out to additional locations to mix up the creative approach.
This year we visited a new abandoned cabin that we had never been to before. It is tucked up in a grove of Aspen trees amongst the high sage desert of Wyoming. The wildflowers were booming this time with yellow flowers as far as the eye could see. We had never actually been to the ranch during wildflower season so it was an amazing treat to be able to see the blooming. We also re-visted the Aspens to try and capture all they have to offer. The Aspens is a particular spot that it takes a few visits to really nail down the approach you are aiming for. It can tend to be overhwehlming at first but the participants came away with some really great looks.
We once again visited The Little Snake River Museum at the end of the dirt road in Savery. This location is so unique as they have transported period piece cabins, school rooms, saloons, etc to the grounds for display. You are able to walk around and experience history first hand. Every cabin has a different set up and tells a different story. They also have a variety of costumes that the models dressed up in depending on what cabin they were modeling in! It was a lot of fun being able to photograph at the museum this year!
Target Practice Competition
We always have a target practice competition during our photography workshop at the ranch. We have an old Armenian .22 that is a lot of fun to shoot with. Ben came away with the top prize with some solid grouping around the bullseye. He was awarded with Spring 1943 which is printed by Kim Weston from his grandfather’s, Edward Weston, original negative. He was psyched! Greg and Azita came in 2nd and 3rd and were both awarded photography books for their sharpshooting skills.
While we are focused and determined on our vision of photography, we always like to have fun in the process. Partaking in a target shoot out, or playing badminton or croquet is a fun way to have fun together and form stronger bonds within the group. It wouldn’t be a Weston Designation at The Boyer YL Ranch without a little friendly competition!
